The city as exhibition space
Digital Art Exhibition, Milan, 2022. Exhibition documentation from the DISIVA archive.
An exhibition on an urban screen meets its audience in the course of everyday life. People encounter an artwork while crossing a square, travelling through a city or pausing in the street. The surroundings become part of the experience: architecture, light, movement and the time available to look all shape how an image is received.
DISIVA develops exhibitions for this public setting. The programme has included Piazza Gae Aulenti in Milan, Times Square in New York and floating screens in Miami. Each site invites a different relationship between the work and its audience. Scale makes an image visible; the artist’s ideas give that encounter depth.
The exhibition archive brings these projects together, tracing how digital artworks inhabit different cities and formats.

Looking beyond the screen
A work made for public digital presentation has to respond to more than a screen’s dimensions. Its rhythm, visual structure and conceptual coherence matter alongside the conditions in which it will be seen.
For the New York 2026 application, the Curatorial Committee considers artistic quality, originality, contemporary research, conceptual coherence and suitability for public digital presentation. These criteria connect the immediate encounter with an artwork to a considered assessment of the artist’s practice.
The committee brings together perspectives from art history, independent curating, galleries and cultural institutions. The full member profiles and published selection criteria offer a way to understand this process before applying.
